The Burden of Trust

It’s a difficult thing to do, you know. Trusting someone or something, I mean.

Ask yourself a question: do you trust FAANG big corpos? If your answer is negative, keep asking yourself why. Why don’t you? Perhaps it has something to do with possible backdoors, hypothetical anti-consumer practices, or even a deeper ideologically based distrust of a bottom-line-centric market.

Anyhow, you just don’t trust these huge corpos, à la Johnny Silverhand. I get it. But instead of bombing the crap out of Saka HQ, you install Linux in the manliest way possible: by reading the Arch Wiki.

Now keep questioning yourself even more, shall you? Why? Why do you trust the so-called (Linux) «community»? Why do you trust the maintainers of Nobara, Bazzite, Pop!_OS, Garuda, NixOS, or Mint over FAANG’s evil minions? Perhaps you’re in your twenties or even your early thirties; eager to belong, to label yourself among your keen and kind. Perhaps you’re not even fully integrated into the labor market yet.

There’s nothing wrong with it, but I’m afraid the doubt, if not the question, persists: why trust them without knowing their true intentions, their true commitment, or their actual technical expertise? Yeah, yeah, the open-source code and all that. When was the last time you read the source code of your favorite FOSS yourself?

If you’ve been into Linux for some time, you ought to be aware of the many bugs, missing basic features, broken dependencies, and instabilities linked to basically any distro. Yet there you are, talkin’ s**** about Windows or Apple while getting yourself quite an obscure Linux rig, hehe.
